Woken up by your cat’s midnight zoomies? Don’t just blame its excess energy! Part 2

Core principle: Tire your cat out before bedtime and adjust its daily schedule.

High-intensity hunting routine before sleep

One to two hours before bed, play a full hunting game with a wand toy. Let your cat chase, pounce and grab the toy prey.

End the play session when your cat is breathing heavily and starts grooming itself. Then feed a main meal or puzzle feeder treats.

This replicates the wild cat cycle: hunt → catch prey → eat → sleep. After this routine, your cat will feel full and content, and is more likely to sleep soundly.

Avoid long, uninterrupted naps in the daytime

Have short play sessions with your cat whenever you are free during the day. Use puzzle feeders and sniffing mats to let your cat work for food. Mental exhaustion drains energy more effectively than simple running and jumping.

Do not react to midnight zoomies at all

When your cat races around or meows loudly at night: no turning on lights, no talking, no chasing it away.

Even if it knocks things over, ignore it as long as there is no safety risk. Any response will reinforce its bad habit of acting up at night.

Things may get worse in the beginning. Keep it up for around one week. Your cat will gradually stop zooming once it learns it cannot get your attention.

Secure your living environment

Store fragile items and cups safely. Seal windows properly to prevent injuries during zoomies. Prepare cat trees and tunnels to give your cat a proper space to release energy.

Spay or neuter at the appropriate age

It is hard to reduce nighttime restlessness for unneutered cats in heat. Timely sterilization can greatly cut down midnight hyperactivity.

Take your cat to the vet for sudden abnormal zoomies

If this behavior appears suddenly, along with changes in eating, drinking or litter box habits, rule out potential health problems first.
